Since its foundation, MachineWorks has focused on providing component technology – software libraries designed to be embedded as “engines” into applications developed by other companies. MachineWorks is a CNC simulation engine used in a wide range of leading CAM systems, while Polygonica is an engine for mesh operations.
The libraries are used in a range of leading additive and subtractive software. MachineWorks is used as the CNC simulation engine inside Dassault Systèmes CATIA, Autodesk Fusion, OpenMind hyperMILL and leading CAM solutions from Hexagon, including NCSimul. Polygonica is embedded in Oqton’s 3DXpert, 3D Systems 3DSprint, Stratasys GrabCAD Print, Hexagon AM Studio, Ansys Discovery SpaceClaim and Hexagon’s Geomagic Suite. Other clients include industrial manufacturers such as Vulcan Forms, manufacturing service providers such as Xometry, and topology optimisation specialists such as Novineer.
The company has recently added GPU acceleration to the MachineWorks libraries, cutting the time needed to compute results for long simulations from tens of minutes to tens of seconds. As well as planning to integrate GPU operations into Polygonica, the company is working on a new reverse engineering solution for automatically converting meshes created by topology optimisation into editable parametric CAD BREP. The initial version is expected in time for Formnext 2026.
