Additive Manufacturing is accelerating innovation in the mobility sector – from lightweight design and functional integration to the rapid development of new components. In the second Technology Talk of the year, our experts will discuss how AM is shaping the future of mobility and which solutions are already being successfully implemented today.

Stefanie Brickwede

Stefanie Brickwede

Head of Additive Manufacturing, Deutsche Bahn

Stefanie Brickwede is one of the pioneers of AM in the railway industry. As Head of Additive Manufacturing at Deutsche Bahn, she has been driving the adoption of 3D printing for years to secure spare parts availability and address obsolescence challenges. With her involvement, more than 200,000 additively manufactured components have already been implemented in the rail sector. As Managing Director of the industry network Mobility goes Additive (MGA), which she co-founded in 2016, she promotes collaboration between industry, research institutions and end users, while advocating for standards, qualification processes and the industrial scaling of additive manufacturing across a wide range of sectors. After studying economics, Stefanie Brickwede started her career in the mobility sector. Before taking over the management of the Group project “3D Printing” at Deutsche Bahn in 2015, she held various leadership positions at DB AG. As Head of AM, she and her team are responsible for the successful implementation of additive manufacturing across the entire DB Group.

With this background and driven by passion, she founded the leading European user network “Mobility/Medical goes Additive” in 2016. The focus is on users from medicine, defense, passenger transport, aerospace, among others with the aim of scaling AM through joint projects, events, education and political engineering.

In addition, Ms. Brickwede is the initiator of the “Women in AM” network.

Industries with very durable assets – such as machinery, vehicles or plant – often build up stocks of spare parts over many years or even decades. In this context, Additive Manufacturing offers an excellent alternative through ‘manufacturing on demand’, with significant potential for savings. Deutsche Bahn has already saved €25 million in this way over the last five years alone.

In her presentation, Stefanie Brickwede will explain how this works, which parts and technologies facilitate it, and what role effect monitoring plays.
