The technology allows laser beam geometry and energy distribution to be adjusted in software during the manufacturing process.

For metal AM, the system can generate not only conventional beam profiles such as flat-top or ring-shaped beams, but also multi-spot configurations and freely defined patterns. According to Santec, initial tests with prototype systems have demonstrated reduced spatter formation, lower porosity, and increased processing speeds. The SLM-310 is designed as an integration component for AM machine manufacturers and laser system providers.

The SLM-310 is a core enabling technology rather than a complete processing solution. Integrating programmable beam shaping into production systems requires expertise in beam control software, optical system design, and process optimisation to accurately generate and deliver shaped laser beams for specific applications.

As additive manufacturing moves toward higher production volumes and increasingly demanding applications in aerospace, energy, medical devices, and advanced manufacturing, closer collaboration between laser manufacturers, machine builders, optical specialists, and end users will play an increasingly important role in accelerating industrial adoption.
