From Casting to Code: Reinventing Propulsion for the Digital Fleet

19 Nov 2025

The Digitally Enabled Efficient Propeller (D.E.E.P.) project is more than a feasibility study—it’s a test case for how data and advanced manufacturing can rewrite the rules of maritime hardware. Propellers, long treated as “dumb metal,” are being re-imagined as living, data-rich assets. By merging additive processes with digital twin monitoring, the consortium is exploring not only how to manufacture propellers differently but also how to understand them intimately across design, production, and service life.

Deep Manufacturing is demonstrating how complex geometries can be produced at scale without sacrificing integrity, while Authentise is weaving in the digital thread and AI-driven monitoring needed for certification and lifecycle assurance. Together, these contributions ensure the project isn’t just chasing efficiency—it’s building a blueprint for more innovative, self-reporting components that could redefine fleet readiness worldwide.
