Virtual Maintenance: How Deutsche Bahn Maintains Their Trains With 3D Printing

Deutsche Bahn operates 367 ICEs and several hundred regional trains. Traveling along 33.000 kilometers of train tracks, these trains are susceptible to environmental influences and general wear and tear. Therefore, their maintenance is crucial. To being able to react quickly if unplanned maintenance is due and to easily adapt tools and fixtures, Deutsche Bahn Fahrzeuginstandhaltung has included additive manufacturing in their processes.

Among their array of 3D printers, the team operates Formlabs SLA and SLS machines for their tools and fixtures. In fact, DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung is pioneering SLS 3D printing in Europe, being the first company to use Formlabs newest SLS printer, Fuse 1+ 30W. The team is also testing new materials in cooperation with Formlabs. Their goal is to establish a virtual warehouse for 10% of all spare parts (10,000 parts) for vehicle maintenance by 2030. Installation patterns will also play a major role.

In this talk, find out how the team at DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung uses 3D printing to manufacture tools and fixtures to maintain their trains.

The speakers are:
Antonia Knabe, Project Engineer Additive Manufacturing, DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH
Helge Schneevogt, Technology Manager AM & Application Engineer, DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH, DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH
