Bioactive 3D-printed permanent materials for dental applications

19 Nov 2025

This contribution presents recent studies on the development of photopolymer-based resins for stereolithography 3D-printing that are modified with chlorhexidine (CHX) as an antimicrobial agent. The focus lies on understanding the balance between processability, drug stability, and functional and mechanical performance of the printed parts.

A key observation concerns the potential partial loss or incooperation of CHX during printing and post-processing, which significantly affects the effective drug loading in the final material. In parallel, the potential influence of polymerization degree and network density on CHX release is addressed. It is hypothesized that lower conversion could lead to enhanced CHX mobility and faster release, whereas highly crosslinked structures may restrict diffusion. Release studies combined with analytical characterization of residual CHX content provide a basis for correlating processing parameters with release behavior and stability of the active compound. Furthermore, the distribution of CHX within the polymer network and its long-term release profile as well as the influence on mechanical properties are examined. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how additive manufacturing parameters affect the incorporation and release of bioactive agents, and thereby support the development of SLA-based materials with tailored antimicrobial functionality.
