Sustainable manufacturing futures driven by AM? Concepts, challenges and possibilities.

Sustainability is a hot topic across all industry sectors and increasingly within AM. This is driven by growing acknowledgement of the critical need to develop more sustainable approaches to manufacturing. Within academia and industry many are asking how digital technologies can enable more sustainable production.

This presentation will discuss the potential role of AM, outlining the key areas in which AM technologies could enable, initiate or support sustainability initiatives. This will include how AM is/can contribute to related industry goals around electrification and lightweighting, for example. Reflection will be made on the possible futures for AM and sustainability, recognising the challenges as well as the possibilities, and asking questions around the degree to which sustainable production will result in the re-localisation of manufacturing and how value chains may significantly change (linking here to circular economies in particular). The presentation will translate the current leading academic research into industry-relevant knowledge with the aim to encourage companies and individuals to begin, or further develop, their sustainability strategies.

The speaker is:
Prof. Dr. Jennifer Johns, School Interdisciplinary Research Lead & SIMBE Research Director, University of Bristol
