Using Metal 3D Printing to Develop Active Suspension

Domin uses metal 3D printing as a tool to develop the world’s smallest and most powerful hydraulic valve technology combined with our highly compact and powerful pump to develop ground-breaking active suspension for the Automotive industry. The presentation will tell the story of how we use additive manufacturing as a tool to develop technology that can truly increase vehicle efficiency.

To use our resources in a more effective way, we need new approaches to designing the elements within a vehicle.  

There are huge limitations with the way vehicles are controlled today and opportunities for significant reductions in energy use. If we think differently, then we can achieve something remarkable.   

There are millions of cars on the road that use semi-active hydraulic systems to improve ride and handling, some that have developed active suspension, but there are still limitations.   

Active suspension has the potential to radically reduce the amount of energy used to drive 100km. Today, they consume huge energy and are big and expensive. Additive manufacturing has enabled us to develop technology that allows us to create an active suspension systems that uses drastically less energy, and is drastically smaller.  

Metal additive manufacturing has seen limited use in mass-produced products. We are one of only a handful of companies that use the technology to fully produce commercial products. By using metal 3D printing, we have realised a complete redesign of what hydraulic systems can be.   

We have been able to design systems that are tiny, powerful, and energy efficient. Metal 3D printing has enabled us to develop complex components that are optimised for fluid movement, and we are able to produce this with little to no waste.
