High performance molds from the metal 3D-Printer, implemented in a new technical level! Comprehensive AM project by AddUp, with the support of Siemens DI for Harting Technology Group

21 Nov 2024

Addup has launched in 2024 the Additiv Manufacturing for Injection Molding projekt (#2024AMIM) to accelerate the adoption of 3d printing in the tooling industry. 16x industrial companies from the Tool and Die Industry have joined and contributed to the project with their requirements and challanges. 17x Technology partners from all relevant fields have also joined the consortium to bring their expertise for accelerating the applications development.

This project has focused on 7 main points:
Material development, Productivity, Quality, Sustainability, Function development, Time saving, Safety and powder handling.

With all the knowledge build up in those areas a Mold making company is able to accelerate the adoption of the LPBF technology to improve the overall quality and productivity of their products.

In this case study we are going to focus on the project given by Harting where the goal is to produce mold cores and cavities in AM for a production system. This project will allow Harting to understand and integrate all the steps involved in 3D printing journey into their injection molding field.  They key aspects of this case study are:

  • The conformal cooling design and its validation using the latest Siemens NX mold cooling simulations
  • The thermo-mechanical simulation of the print job to produce first time right also with the support of Siemens NX
  • The print preparation with a focus on high productivity and very good as-built quality
  • The required post process steps to guarantee the optimal mechanical properties of the parts
  • The built up of the inhouse machining competence for 3D printed parts
  • The analysis of the cycle time shortening and plastic part quality increase with the conformal cooling

In this presentation AddUp, Harting and Siemens will give you all the details on how molds can be industrialized for serial production and what are the benefits associated with the AM production of the molds.
