Development of an Cylinder Head Prototype by AM for Marine Engines

22 Nov 2024

This presentation will outline Wärtsilä's strategic approach to incorporating additive manufacturing (AM) technologies in marine engine production over the past six years, focusing on a case study from 2024 involving a cylinder head prototype developed using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology. The prototype, designed for single-cylinder engine testing, incorporates optimized conformal cooling to enhance heat dissipation and topological optimization to reduce the overall structure’s weight by over 50%. Additionally, the AM design integrates more than 10 subsystems into a single structure. The study's findings will be presented, including upcoming testing at Wärtsilä’s Test Rig in early 2025. Attendees will gain insights into Wärtsilä’s process for adopting LPBF technology and the implications for innovation in marine engine manufacturing.
