AI assistant toward first time right in Laser Powder Bed Fusion

22 Nov 2024

While Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) has proven its ability to deliver components within specifications, its widespread application in industries such as aerospace is hindered by the need for extensive trial-and-error development phases. These phases incur significant costs and time, posing a crucial limitation to the broader adoption of LPBF.

In collaboration with Gravity Pull Systems, Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne has developed an innovative AI-based software aimed at analyzing, correcting, and optimizing LPBF laser toolpaths to enhance both quality and productivity. This presentation will delve into three key aspects:

1. Impact of Machine Settings: Explore the influence of machine parameters such as speed, delays, skywriting, and ramping on the executed trajectories and actual energy inputs. This analysis will be based on real scanning speed data and melt pool temperature recordings obtained during experimental trials.

2. Laser Trajectories and Porosity: Introduce a specialized AI tool designed to predict porosity based on laser trajectories. The accuracy of this tool will be compared against test coupons, providing valuable insights into the impact of laser paths on porosity formation.

3. Benchmarking of the Software: Present the results of benchmarking the AI-based software against printed samples. This comparison will include addressing slicer limitations for simple test coupons (e.g., cube and pyramid) and more complex components like topology-optimized brackets, impellers, tyne vanes, and compliant mechanisms. Evaluation parameters will focus on porosity and productivity.
