The reason you don't find new applications for AM - A proven approach to unlocking the benefits of AM The reason you don't find new applications for AM - A proven approach to unlocking the benefits of AM

20.11.2024

The advantages of additive manufacturing are well-known by many company employees. However, 3D printing has yet to establish itself as a fully-fledged manufacturing process, beyond prototyping and fixtures. This is partly due to complex investment decisions, as the competitive advantages and costs for yet-unknown business cases are difficult to assess. On an operational level, evaluating the feasibility and benefits of individual components is often challenging. This presentation introduces a practical approach to identify the targeted benefits of AM within a company and to derive the necessary measures.

Searching for applications within the existing portfolio has proven problematic. As a result of this, components are found where the biggest issues have already been resolved. These parts have proven themselves in practice and enjoy the trust of employees and customers. Strong arguments, effective change management, and significant trust in this new technology are needed to alter these parts and produce them additively. Another disadvantage of this procedure is that, in most cases, leveraging the full value of additive manufacturing requires the development of new parts from the ground up.

To address these challenges, a proven approach that combines established methods from innovation management and engineering sciences is presented. This approach serves as the foundation for decision-making relating to improving the benefits of existing machines, evaluating investments in new AM machines, or contracting manufacturing service providers. It yields quantifiable results, indicating where AM can benefit the company or where a decision against AM may be well-founded.

The focus extends beyond identifying existing parts with optimization potential to exploring new market opportunities and enhancing existing value chains. This comprehensive approach enables the full utilization of AM's advantages and the implementation of technically and economically viable parts.
